Tuesday Night Indie Spotlight Episode #70: Plague Road | PS4 Gameplay

Tuesday night is indie night! This week, I (@piccolo930) fired up developer Arcade Distillery's quirky, dystopian strategy-RPG, Plague Road.

I was presently surprised with this one. I really enjoyed my first hour with Plague Road. I wasn't quite sure what to expect going into this stream -- I didn't know much about the game outside of a post I saw previously on the official PlayStation Blog -- but I was intrigued to play Plague Road and find out more. I didn't realize two things: 1) How cool this game looks and 2) Combat is grid-based. The unique visual style Plague Road supports is the first thing that jumped out to me. I loved the flat, 2D look of the characters and backgrounds, and the game just looks really cool in motion. Movement is smooth and fluid across the side-scrolling areas you lead your hero through, and the detailed characters and enemies sport an almost Victorian aesthetic that I think plays well with the dreary narrative. Then there's the combat. Some of your standard, grid-based strategic tropes are on display here -- turn-based movement, ranged and close-quarters attacks, etc. -- but it's all built around this idea of these survivors you come across in the game world. A plague has devastated the land, and often on your journeys you'll come across someone who has survived the epidemic. After rescuing them, you have the option to add them to your party and utilize their different talents and abilities on the battlefield. Nurses can heal, for instance, while Peasants make good warriors. There's a ton under the hood here mechanically that I can't wait to explore more of when it comes to survivors, including managing your survivors via some kind of a mini-settlement, but first impressions are promising. I think Plague Road has the potential to be a pretty cool game when all is said and done, and I'm looking forward to jumping back into it soon. Seems like a perfect Vita title as well! If you've yet to check out Plague Road for yourself, take a look at the video below and see what it's all about!

If you have played Plague Road, let us know what you think about it in the comments below, and be sure to watch the now Tuesday Night Indie Spotlight live, every Tuesday at 10pm EST on our YouTube channel!

Plague Road was streamed with a digital copy of the game graciously provided to us by the game's developer, Arcade Distillery. Plague Road is available now on PS4, Vita, and PC, and is coming to Xbox One later this year!
