Tuesday Night Indie Spotlight Ep. 60: Cosmic Star Heroine (PS4 Gameplay)
Tuesday night is indie night! This week, I (@piccolo930) fired up developer Zeboyd Games' awesome 16-bit throwback RPG, Cosmic Star Heroine.
This game is right up my alley. I cut my RPG teeth on the SNES, playing games like Final Fantasy IV, Chrono Trigger, and Secret of Mana, and Cosmic Star Heroine evokes that era of RPG better than almost any other game out there. This is especially true of Secret of Mana and Chrono Trigger, two games who's DNA -- at least early on -- are most definitely coursing through Cosmic Star Heroine's veins. The battle system is a particular highlight in the early going; it's turn-based design and deceptive strategy are a standout. I love having to choose between replenishing your abilities, healing your allies, or going in for the kill. There's a nice give and take in terms of the game's risk/reward proposition in this respect. You'll find yourself having to choose between going for that one last ditch attack while your damage boost is still active, or healing yourself and playing it safe to make sure you're around for the next few turns. The story is intriguing, and I'm curious to see where they take things from here. Like any good JRPG, the narrative is sure to open up in the near future and become something far greater, with far more circumstance, than what we see now. I also like the characters, and it seems there will be a nice variety for you to take into battle with you. If you're at all a fan of RPGs from the 16-bit era -- there's a fair bit of Phantasy Star in here as well, from what I understand (I'm not as familiar with that series) -- you owe it to yourself to check this one out. While the nostalgia is sure to hook you early on, the gameplay and unfolding narrative is sure to keep you around long after that's worn off. If you've yet to check out Cosmic Star Heroine for yourself, take a look at the video below and see what it's all about!
