Tuesday Night Indie Spotlight #99: Wulverblade | PS4 Pro 60FPS Gameplay
Tuesday night is indie night! This week, Brent (@TheDude1979) joined myself (@piccolo930) in the chat as I fired up developer Fully Illustrated and Darkwind Media's 2D side-scrolling beat-em-up, Wulverblade.
I absolutely love the presentation in Wulverblade. The comic book/animation style graphics, stirring score, beautifully drawn story scenes, and interwoven historical references all combine to form an irresistible package that immediately drew me in. It's clear no corners were cut in delivering on Wulverblade's vision. Thankfully, this is not a title simply about the package its wrapped up in; the game's beautiful presentation is supported by buttery smooth beat-em-up gameplay. Wulverblade is clearly influenced by old school side-scrolling brawlers like Final Fight, TMNT: The Arcade Game, and Double Dragon, and I love what I've played so far of this modern homage to a genre I grew up playing. There's something special about playing a classic 2D beat-em-up on the PS4 in 2018. While the game has been out on the Switch for a few months (and has been well-received there), Wulverblade's release on PS4, Xbox One, and PC brings with it full 60fps gameplay, and its wonderful. While I haven't experienced the Switch version, I can tell you this game looks glorious in motion at 60fps as the animation, brutal combat, and gorgeous character models pop off the screen at a higher frame rate. My only real gripe so far is with the game's dodge mechanic. It's a little cumbersome to have to block, and then double tap left or right to dodge roll in a modern title. I understand this is a throwback to the past, but I would have loved to have seen a more up to date implementation of the dodge mechanic here. It's a little unwieldy in the heat of battle. That aside though, I'm head over heels for this game early on, it's a ton of fun and I can't wait to continue my way through this addicting brawler! If you've yet to check out Wulverblade for yourself, take a look at the video and see what it's all about!
