Tuesday Night Indie Spotlight #74: Pyre | PS4 Gameplay
Tuesday night is indie night! This week, I (@piccolo930) fired up developer Supergiant Games' gorgeous, party-based RPG, Pyre.
I'm in love with this game early on. First of all, it's flat-out gorgeous. Supergiant has always had a way with visuals and animation, and Pyre may be their best effort yet on this front. The game is colorful and has an almost hand-drawn look to it. The clean lines, cartoony-style, and fluid animations give the game a sort of Disney quality about it visually that is really pleasing to look at. The soundtrack is also top notch (as expected, it is a Supergiant joint after all). I'm especially fond of the soothing guitar licks you're exposed to at the start of the game. If you're a fan of video game music, Pyre sounds like a soundtrack you're going to want to add to your collection. The gameplay itself, centered around a series of ancient rites in which teams compete to escape this sort of purgatory or exile they find themselves trapped in, is a ton of fun. Two teams of three battle to score an orb into their opponent's pyre (or goal), utilizing the different techniques and abilities available to the characters on their teams. It's a sort of Fourth Circle of Hell version of handball, if you will. While the opponents are easy enough to take down early on -- I imagine this is a concerted effort by the developer to ease you into the game -- there's a ton of strategy under the hood of these rites as you decide who to take into battle, who to move and when, which path to take, when to attack and when to fall back, when to go for the goal, etc. I can't wait to get into some more challenging matches and really explore some of the different tactics and strategies at my disposal. Add in an interesting story, well-written characters, and an awesome narrator, and you've got the recipe for a kick-ass game, at least early on. If you've yet to check out Pyre for yourself, take a look at the video below and see what it's all about!
