Tuesday Night Indie Spotlight #73 - Fallen Legion: Sins of an Empire | PS4 Gameplay
Tuesday night is indie night! This week, I (@piccolo930) fired up developer Yummy Yummy Tummy Games' incredibly deep turn-based RPG, Fallen Legion: Sins of an Empire.
Playing this game, I was struck by how complex the battle system is here (in a good way). Fallen Legion utilizes a modified form of an Active Time Battle system; the characters you control and the enemies you're fighting each attack at varying times based on when their attacks are ready to go. In other words, if your attack is cooled down or available to use, you don't need to wait for the enemy to take a turn. What makes Fallen Legion's take on this formula so interesting is the way in which it layers so many different elements on top of the turn-based combat. Things you'd typically associate with fighting games as opposed to RPGs, such as combos and blocking, are a big part of the moment-to-moment battle system here. Blocking at just the right time to parry an attack, building up your team combo to unleash a devastating Deathblow attack, and deciding which attribute buffs to set-up on your characters are all part of a normal battle. It's deep, complex, and difficult to master, but also incredibly rewarding once you start executing perfect blocks and landing Deathblows after a successful combo. It's clear this is going to be a tough system to fully comprehend and conquer -- and it will surely be a deterrent to some -- but it's been fun to play so far during my brief time with the title, and I definitely want to play more. The story hasn't grasped me yet, and the sporadic voice acting is a weird choice during dialogue heavy story segments, but the combat system has me ready for more. It doesn't hurt that the music is great as well! I'm also really looking forward to checking out the Vita's alternate version of this title, as it tackles the game from the enemy's perspective. If you've yet to check out Fallen Legion: Sins of an Empire for yourself, take a look at the video below and see what it's all about!
