Tuesday Night Indie Spotlight #72.5: Mr. Shifty | PS4 Gameplay
Tuesday night is indie night! In the second half of our first ever Indie Spotlight double-header, I (@piccolo930) fired up developer Team Shifty's high-octane teleportation brawler, Mr. Shifty.
The concept behind Mr. Shifty is so good. As publisher tinyBuild so eloquently explains in their Google description for the game, "If Nightcrawler had babies with Hotline Miami, it would be Mr. Shifty." As a big fan of both Nightcrawler and Hotline Miami, I've had a lot of fun with Mr. Shifty so far. It's so satisfying teleporting around the room and getting the drop on unsuspecting enemies, clubbing them over the head with a boat oar or kicking them through the glass of a nearby window. While the Hotline Miami inspiration is clear -- a game I absolutely love -- Mr. Shifty is much more focused on action, leading to some intense encounters. The more action-oriented take on the Hotline Miami formula means there's less strategy involved, but when the combat is this brutal and fun to execute, that's a compromise I can live with. The clean, almost graphic novel aesthetic is beautiful in motion, and I'm a big fan of all of the different ways you can interact with the environment, whether you're grabbing a trident from a nearby statue and hurling it at your enemies, or smashing a bookcase and grabbing the 2x4 it leaves behind. There is the occasional slow down and stutter while playing, and that's a bummer for a game like this that's built around speed and fluidity, but it wasn't enough of a distraction to hinder my overall enjoyment of game. In the end, I'm really looking forward to playing some more. It's just a fun, challenging game to hop into and knock some heads around. If you've yet to check out Mr. Shifty for yourself, take a look at the video below and see what it's all about!
