Thursday Night Indie Spotlight Ep. 57: 88 Heroes (PS4 Gameplay)
Thursday night is indie night! This week, I (@piccolo930) fired up developer Bitmap Bureau's goofy action-platformer, 88 Heroes.
I love the concept behind 88 Heroes, and it's the thing that originally drew me to the game. Dr. H8 is determined to eliminate Earth in 88 minutes with the use of 88 thermonuclear warheads aimed at the planet. To thwart his evil schemes, it's up to 88 of the lamest heroes on the planet to save the day. The idea that the entire game is based around the number 88 and Dr. H8's quest to eviscerate Earth is silly and over-the-top by design, and the presentation plays this up perfectly. I really like how you're viewing the game from Dr. H8's perspective, and his shenanigans aboard his orbital spaceship between himself and his robot companions legitimately effect gameplay as they walk in front of the screen or lose power momentarily. What I didn't expect, was how challenging this game was going to be. This game is much harder than it initially lets on. There are 88 levels total, and I didn't come anywhere close to the end before all of my heroes died on the stream. It's going to take a ton of practice learning the levels and mastering the different heroes if I'm going to make it to the end. While I appreciate the different heroes that you swap between, a good chunk of them are utterly useless. It's true that this plays up the "lame hero" aspect of the story, but in practice, it can lead to some frustrating deaths and make a challenging game even more so a lot of the time, perhaps even unfairly so. While I love the concept in theory, I'm on the fence about its implementation and execution until I've gotten a chance to play around with it some more. I had fun on the stream, and I'm looking forward to delving into it even deeper. Be sure to stay tuned to the site as I'll have a full review up for the title in the near future! If you've yet to check out 88 Heroes for yourself, take a look at the video below and see what it's all about!
