Thursday Night Indie Spotlight Ep. 55: Disc Jam 4-Player Battle! (PS4 Gameplay)
Thursday night is indie night! This week, on a very special episode of the Indie Spotlight, I (@piccolo930) was joined by my three Short Pause compatriots as we fired up developer High Horse Entertainment's insanely addicting fusion of air hockey and tennis, Disc Jam.
While the overall Disc Jam package is pretty barebones right now (essentially one game mode for 2-4 players, a minimal cosmetic upgrade system, and no leaderboards), the gameplay included here is fun as hell. The game really is setup as a mixture of a tennis and air hockey match; one or two players on each side of the "net" compete to land their disc in the opponent's goal or territory. I love that the game is accessible to the pick-up-and-play kind of player, but also incredibly deep and nuanced to those that invest their time into the title. While this could be an issue down the line as veteran players hone their techniques and assert their dominance over less seasoned Disc Jammers, right now, in the early stages of the game's lifecycle, everyone is on an even playing field. This is especially true with the option to set up a private match with friends. I had a ton of fun setting up a four-player battle with the rest of the Short Pause crew. If you've got some friends you can get together, this is definitely the way to go. Sliding around, catching discs, powering up super moves, and curving the perfect shot is a fast-paced and exhilarating experience. If High Horse Entertainment can continue to clean up the online experience (connection issues and lag are a problem currently) and expand the game with additional content and leaderboards, they've got a bonafide, Rocket League-esque hit on their hands. If you've yet to check out Disc Jam for yourself, take a look at the video below and see what it's all about!
