Tuesday Night Indie Spotlight #102.5: Xenon Valkyrie+ | PS4 Gameplay

Tuesday night is indie night! This week, on the second episode of our special Indie Spotlight double header, Brent (@TheDude1979) joined myself (@piccolo930) in the chat as I fired up developer Diabolical Mind's hardcore rouge-like platformer, Xenon Valkyrie+.

I wasn't sure what to expect from Xenon Valkyrie+. Even after booting it up and spending a few minute with it, I still wasn't entirely sure that I'd be sold on this game. However, as time progressed and I played more and more, I started to learn the game and its nuances. Like any good rogue-like, you spend the beginning of your time with this game learning its mechanics and rules of engagement. As I got deeper into my playthrough on the stream, I really started to get into what Xenon Valkyrie+ has to offer. It's clearly influenced by Spelunky -- an amazing video game and the gold standard for the rogue-like genre -- and it wears those influences on its sleeve. Thankfully, there are far worse games to be influenced by. I love the RPG elements that come into play as you descend down each of the game's levels in search of the exit. I enjoyed visiting the shop between each level and upgrading my character as much as I could. It's strangely addicting as your character grows in power with each stage. While the crude pixel art graphics are perhaps a little too crude for the big screen (this game seems a better fit on the Vita or a smaller screen), the game is generally responsive and smooth. Make no mistake about it, either; this is a hardcore rogue-like platformer. When you die, it's back to square one and you start from the beginning right back where you started. However, the game's addicting loop of completing stages, leveling up your character, and battling bosses works well enough to keep you coming back between deaths. If you can get past the crude graphics and brutal rogue-like mechanics, I think there's a hidden gem here. The soundtrack is all kinds of 8-bit chiptune rad as well. If you're a rogue-like fan, especially of something like Spelunky, give this one a shot! If you've yet to check out Xenon Valkyrie+ for yourself, take a look at the video and see what it's all about!

If you have played Xenon Valkyrie+, let us know what you think about it in the comments below, and be sure to watch the Tuesday Night Indie Spotlight live, every Tuesday at 10pm EST on our YouTube channel!

Special thanks to Fabrice Breton and COWCAT Games for supplying us with a digital copy of Xenon Valkyrie+ to stream on the show. Xenon Valkyrie+ is available now on PS4, Xbox One, Vita, and PC!
