Thursday Night Indie Spotlight Ep. 54: forma.8 (PS4 Gameplay)
Thursday night is indie night! This week, I (@piccolo930) fired up developer Mixed Bag Games' tranquil, mysterious, and exploratory metroidvania romp, forma.8.
I really like this game. I'm a huge fan of the metroidvania genre, and I love that forma.8 is trying to do something different with it. As a cute little flying robot fresh off the assembly line, you can go and fly wherever you please across any of forma.8's environments. This means the typical metroidvania progression tropes like double jump, flying, etc. don't apply here. You can already go anywhere you want. This necessitates that the designers provide different progression challenges, and what I've played so far is pretty clever. Instead of double jumping to a previously out of reach platform, you've got to use your bombs and attacks to figure out how to get from point A to point B. I'm enjoying this unique approach to the genre, and I like how the game forces me to think in a different way than I'm used to in these kinds of games. It doesn't hurt that the game looks great, has a moody and emotive soundtrack, and the performance is perfect with nary a hitch in sight. The boss battle I encountered at the end of the stream was a treat too. I'm looking forward to spending some more time with this one and discovering what mysteries await as I continue to explore forma.8's foreboding and hostile planetary environment. If you've yet to check out forma.8 for yourself, take a look at the video below and see what it's all about!
